How to Scale a Photo to Canvas Size
3 min read
Before you transfer a photo to canvas, it helps to know how much you are enlarging it and how big each grid square will be on the canvas. A scaling calculator removes the guesswork.
1. Compare the proportions
A 4 × 6 photo and a 16 × 20 canvas are different shapes. Enter both sizes into the canvas scaling calculator and it will flag the mismatch so you can plan a crop or a margin.
Cropping the photo to the canvas shape usually looks better than stretching it, which distorts everything.
2. Read the scale factor and square size
The calculator gives you the scale factor and the size of each grid square on the canvas. Square cells keep the transfer accurate — the tool derives the rows from your columns automatically.
3. Transfer with a matching grid
Draw the same grid on the canvas at the square size from the calculator, then copy the photo square by square. Light charcoal or a watercolor pencil works well and is easy to cover with paint.
